Queenmaker: A Drama That Celebrates Diversity and Empathy

Queenmaker is a 2023 South Korean streaming television series that stars Kim Hee-ae and Moon So-ri as two women who join forces to create a just and truthful world. The series is directed by Oh Jin-seok and written by Moon Ji-young. It was released on Netflix on April 14, 2023.

The series follows Hwang Do-hee, a talented image-maker who quits her job at a powerful business conglomerate to enter the world of politics. She decides to make Oh Kyung-sook, a headstrong human rights lawyer, into the next mayor of Seoul and take down her former employer in the process. The series depicts their challenges and achievements as they overcome adversity and fight for justice.

The series also features Ryu Soo-young as Baek Jae-min, a charming and ambitious journalist who supports Do-hee and Kyung-sook; Seo Yi-sook as Son Young-shim, a single mother and a judge who befriends Do-hee and Kyung-sook; Ok Ja-yeon as Guk Ji-yeon, a loyal and smart assistant who works for Do-hee; Yoon Ji-hye as Eun Seo-jin, a ruthless and greedy lawyer who works for Do-hee's former employer; and Kim Tae-hoon as Ma Jung-seok, a mysterious and powerful politician who has a hidden agenda.

Queenmaker is a refreshing and inspiring drama that tackles issues of disability, discrimination, and accessibility in the workplace and society. It portrays Do-hee as a brilliant and capable woman who uses her unique abilities and perspectives to solve problems and help people. It also shows Kyung-sook as a courageous and passionate woman who uses her legal skills and moral principles to protect the weak and oppressed. The series also showcases their friendship and solidarity as they support each other and learn from each other.

The series also features a diverse and talented cast of supporting characters, each with their own backstory and motivation. Some of the most memorable ones are Ali Abdul (Anupam Tripathi), a migrant worker from Pakistan who is exploited by his employer; Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-soo), an elderly man with a brain tumor who enjoys playing the game; Jang Deok-su (Heo Sung-tae), a violent and selfish gangster who causes trouble for others; Han Mi-nyeo (Kim Joo-ryung), a religious fanatic who believes she is chosen by God; and Lee Byung-hun as the mysterious masked leader of the game.

From my point of view, Queenmaker is one of the best dramas of 2023. It is not only entertaining and thrilling, but also thought-provoking and relevant. It reflects the realities and struggles of many people in today's world, especially those who are marginalized and oppressed by the system. It also challenges us to be more observant, understanding, sympathetic, and empathetic to people and our surroundings, because not everyone is the same, we are all different and that is okay and something to celebrate.
